If game drives, walking safaris and hides aren’t enough of a draw to Africa’s most authentic safari destination, how about taking to the water to get close to Zambia’s exceptional wildlife?

Whether on the iconic Zambezi or on the picturesque Kafue River, Zambia’s exceptional guides ensure guests see wildlife from a whole new perspective. Not for the faint-hearted, this way of encountering animals is hard to beat. Grab your paddle.

The relaxed excitement of canoeing the Lower Zambezi
The Lower Zambezi is renowned for its spectacular canoeing due to the high quality of game viewing and the open stunning scenery; not forgetting the sheer size of the mighty Zambezi River. Not only will you spot the usual crocodiles and hippo pods in large concentrations, you’re also likely to come across lions resting on the banks and elephants crossing over to small islands within the smaller channels. Seeing the game from a low level and in complete silence offers a unique perspective without disturbing them, allowing them to go about their daily business.

All our Lower Zambezi partners offer canoeing in their own unique areas of the river. Whether it’s paddling through the smaller channels or wading amongst the islands down the main part of river, no two canoeing safaris are the same.

Experience Zambia's best-kept secrets when canoeing the Kafue
For those wanting to discover areas a little more off-the-beaten-track, the Kafue River can definitely deliver. Although the river is a main water source for the surrounding wildlife including big game, this canoeing safari is less about sightings and more about accessing otherwise inaccessible areas and exploring parts of the river not many have explored. Being Zambia’s largest national park means there are so many diverse ecosystems to the park so the canoeing experienced on the more open stretches of the river in the north will contrast entirely to the narrower channels and higher banks of the more central region.

KaingU Safari Lodge offers guests the chance to explore a beautiful part of the Kafue River. It’s set where the river meets various small islands creating narrower channels between granite rock and forest filled banks. The more adventurous can experience trails with small rapids whereas the more cautious can opt for calmer waters. Guests can also combine this with an island brunch or sleep-out.
